There is a saying that states “God or the Creator doesn’t come when you call him but he is always right on time.” The fight for civil rights by Lesbians and Gays is being done on many fronts. But there are still places where homophobia is alive and well. And sports, both college and professional, is one of those places. The situation at Penn St., where a former coach was allowed to assault children on the Penn St. campus, is a case of the chickens coming home to roost!
If you haven’t been paying attention to the sports page lately, you may have missed the fact that a major college football program, Penn St., led by a “legend” named Joe Paterno, is in the middle of one of the biggest sexual abuse scandals to ever hit a major college football program. We have a former coach who sexual assaulted numerous boys, IN THE TEAM’S SHOWER among other places, that was known for quite a while, with nothing done to stop it. Let there be no mistake about it, this scandal goes all the way to the top and that includes Paterno. Under no circumstances is child sexual abuse a joke. But this situation had karma written all over it. Because the Paterno led Athletic Department systematically allowed Lesbian and Gay student athletes to be harassed out of Penn St. and almost out of college sports all together, for decades. And it goes back to at least 1980!
It was common knowledge that Rene Portland, head coach of the Women’s Basketball team at Penn St., had a real problem with “Lesbians” and vowed to never have any on “my team or in my program.” Any player or coach who was suspected of being a Lesbian was either fired, harassed, or had their playing time cut significantly. Players who were thought to be Lesbians were kicked off the team and the remaining players were told to “not associate with them or face similar consequences.” She would also threaten to make sure any player “found to be a Lesbian” would “never play major college basketball again.” And to her word, players who left Penn St. were unable to get their school transcripts in a timely manner or the transcripts were incomplete. Many were forced to play junior college basketball. Why am I bringing this up? Because when Portland’s actions were brought to the Athletic Director’s attention, meaning Joe Paterno, he backed up or ignored all of the evidence against Portland and stood by as she destroyed the lives and dreams of young adults. Portland left Penn St. in 2007 after being sued in Federal Court by a former player, harassed out of Penn St. Portland lost the case and not long after, resigned. Fast forward to 2011, and this lack of a conscious allowed at least 8 boys to be raped by a former coach whose actions were well known to Paterno and others.
It has now become public that Paterno, Athletic Director Tim Curley, Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz, and President Graham Spanier, all knew at one time or another, what was going on with former Defensive Line coach Jerry Sandusky. This “man” was given free access to the Penn St. locker room and he used it to rape, molest, and assault boys as young as seven years old! At every turn, the evidence of this man’s actions were ignored or swept under the rug.
As I write this post, Joe Paterno has been “relieved of his duties at Penn St.” To be sure, many people felt that the only way Paterno would leave Penn St. would be in a body bag. But finally, all of the destruction that was done under his watch has come to the light of day and he has been fired. Curley and Schultz, along with Sandusky, have been arrested, and Spanier has also been fired. To say the “chickens have come home to roost” would be an understatement. This is karma for Penn St.’s ass. The creator has a way of letting arrogant, self serving, hypocrites hang themselves with their own rope. And that is EXACTLY what has happened at Penn St.! The bad part about this situation is that children were harmed.

It’s been a while since I last posted something on this blog. Not because I’m still not the “Angriest Black Woman in American” because trust me, I STILL AM. It’s because I have been working on my Lesbian Comic, Lesbionix, and my next project that is still under wraps but will be revealed shortly. But don’t doubt for ONE SECOND that I haven’t been paying attention because I have. And let me tell you, MOTHER IS NOT HAPPY! I just got finished reading an article about a group of Lesbians who were attacked, DEFENDED THEMSELVES, and ending up going to prison. WTF? Yeah, that’s what I said too!
Seems like a group of Lesbians were walking to the train station in New Jersey when, a “street vendor” propositioned them. Obviously not interested in men because that’s what makes us LESBIANS, they turned him down. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dwayne Buckle, A.K.A. IDIOT on the street, proceeded to follow and taunt the ladies, making homophobic comments, grabbing his crouch, and stating what he “wanted to do to them”, including “fucking them straight!” He also spit on/at them and flicked a lit cigarette at them. The IDIOT eventually physically attacked these women who collectively fought him off TWICE, along with the aid of three men who came to help them. Somewhere during the fight, Buckle was stabbed. And this is where the bullshit comes in.
These ladies, who defended themselves against a CLEARLY homophobic attack, were ARRESTED, CONVICTED, and sent to PRISON! Yeah, the IDIOT HOMOPHOBE who attacked these ladies, sent THEM to prison. Now I know this occurred in 2006, but one of these ladies is still in prison. And I’d like to believe that with all the bullying of teens and young adults that has occurred in the last year, and their ensuing suicides, would make a difference today. But I find it mind boggling that these women, minding their own business, defending themselves against an attack, were portrayed as a LESBIAN GANG, and sent to prison.
To the media, these women were presented in animalistic terms like “wolves“, “wolf-packs“, and “she-wolf packs.” Oh, did I fail to mention that a security camera, mounted across the street from where the attack occurred, backed up these seven women’s account about what happened? And they were still convicted!

The Lesbian and Gay struggle for the same rights as straight people has taken many turns. From straight allies going on record saying they support the right of people being able to marry who they wish, to bigots using their position to “keep them in their place”, to people hiding behind religion to justify bigotry. Add this story to the “bigots keeping them in their place!”
Melissa McKenzie, and 18 year old Lesbian was recently kicked out of school because she lives with her 17 year old girlfriend. What does McKenzie living with her girlfriend have to do with her going to school? The principal of Del City high school told Melissa “if you move back home with your parents, you can come back to school.” And how does living at home change that? HUH???
Kelsey Hicks needs to graduate from high school so she can follow her dream of being a firefighter. Both girls, high school softball players, were also kicked off of their team for complaining about their situation. Hicks, McKenzie’s girlfriend, who also wanted to come back to school, thinks the school’s attitude is this:, “you probably won’t do anything with your life so you might as well drop out now.” The “powers that be” must not know of all of the Lesbians and gays who have “done something with their lives.” What about the Lesbian and Gay doctors, lawyers, service men and women, police officers, and teachers, “who do something with their lives every day.” Does Ellen DeGeneres ring a bell?
People in power are no different than anyone else. They have their own biases and bigotries. But they are NOT supposed to use their position to dictate how other people live their lives. The principal’s job is NOT do decide who will “do something with their lives.” His job is to make sure EVERY CHILD has the opportunity to get an education and graduate.
Either or both of the Lamda Defense League and the ACLU needs to get involved in this situation. Because there are two things that are against nature. Playing games with children and old people. And the adults at Del City high school and the school district are indeed “messing with babies!”
