There is a saying that states “God or the Creator doesn’t come when you call him but he is always right on time.” The fight for civil rights by Lesbians and Gays is being done on many fronts. But there are still places where homophobia is alive and well. And sports, both college and professional, is one of those places. The situation at Penn St., where a former coach was allowed to assault children on the Penn St. campus, is a case of the chickens coming home to roost!

If you haven’t been paying attention to the sports page lately, you may have missed the fact that a major college football program, Penn St., led by a “legend” named Joe Paterno, is in the middle of one of the biggest sexual abuse scandals to ever hit a major college football program. We have a former coach who sexual assaulted numerous boys, IN THE TEAM’S SHOWER among other places, that was known for quite a while, with nothing done to stop it. Let there be no mistake about it, this scandal goes all the way to the top and that includes Paterno. Under no circumstances is child sexual abuse a joke. But this situation had karma written all over it. Because the Paterno led Athletic Department systematically allowed Lesbian and Gay student athletes to be harassed out of Penn St. and almost out of college sports all together, for decades. And it goes back to at least 1980!

It was common knowledge that Rene Portland, head coach of the Women’s Basketball team at Penn St., had a real problem with “Lesbians” and vowed to never have any on “my team or in my program.” Any player or coach who was suspected of being a Lesbian was either fired, harassed, or had their playing time cut significantly. Players who were thought to be Lesbians were kicked off the team and the remaining players were told to “not associate with them or face similar consequences.” She would also threaten to make sure any player “found to be a Lesbian” would “never play major college basketball again.” And to her word, players who left Penn St. were unable to get their school transcripts in a timely manner or the transcripts were incomplete. Many were forced to play junior college basketball. Why am I bringing this up? Because when Portland’s actions were brought to the Athletic Director’s attention, meaning Joe Paterno, he backed up or ignored all of the evidence against Portland and stood by as she destroyed the lives and dreams of young adults. Portland left Penn St. in 2007 after being sued in Federal Court by a former player, harassed out of Penn St. Portland lost the case and not long after, resigned. Fast forward to 2011, and this lack of a conscious allowed at least 8 boys to be raped by a former coach whose actions were well known to Paterno and others.

It has now become public that Paterno, Athletic Director Tim Curley, Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz, and President Graham Spanier, all knew at one time or another, what was going on with former Defensive Line coach Jerry Sandusky. This “man” was given free access to the Penn St. locker room and he used it to rape, molest, and assault boys as young as seven years old! At every turn, the evidence of this man’s actions were ignored or swept under the rug.

As I write this post, Joe Paterno has been “relieved of his duties at Penn St.” To be sure, many people felt that the only way Paterno would leave Penn St. would be in a body bag. But finally, all of the destruction that was done under his watch has come to the light of day and he has been fired. Curley and Schultz, along with Sandusky, have been arrested, and Spanier has also been fired. To say the “chickens have come home to roost” would be an understatement. This is karma for Penn St.’s ass. The creator has a way of letting arrogant, self serving, hypocrites hang themselves with their own rope. And that is EXACTLY what has happened at Penn St.! The bad part about this situation is that children were harmed.

For more information on Rene Portland, Joe Paterno, Penn St., and homophobia, please watch the documentary “Training Rules.” The evidence is OVERWHELMING and speaks about the true character of Joe Paterno! And to be honest with ya, this couldn’t have happened to a better guy! Karma is a bitch Joe. And so are you! May you get everything that is coming to you. Because you DESERVE IT!

On December 26, 2010, one of the most talented arrangers, musicians, performers, producers, singers, and song writers too many people have never heard of, passed away. Teena Marie, Lady T to those who knew, admired, and loved her, was loved by Black folks since she first came onto the scene. The fact that she was white with the voice of a Black woman made us love her even more. She was family to us and she knew it. Having seen her in person a few times, I can attest to the mutual love affair we had for each other. And while there have been other white performers who supposedly had “soul“, they will NEVER sit at the table like Teena Marie could!

Teena Marie was one of the first white performers ever signed by the storied Motown Records. And in a reverse of how things used to be, Teena’s first album didn’t have her picture on the cover because Motown didn’t think African American audiences would listen if we knew she was white. Well they were wrong. Lady T hit the ground running and every song made us run right along with her. With early jams like “I’m just a sucka for your love” and “Deja Vu“, her style resonated with us and put her on the map. But it was her duet with funk master Rick James titled “Fire and Desire” that cemented her place in the hearts and souls of Black people. For most African Americans, that song is one of our favorite “slow jams” of all time. The mere mention of that song sends most of us “high fiving” and reminiscing about where we were, what we were doing, and who we were with, the first time we heard that song. It certainly does with me! Other songs followed like “It must be magic”, “Square Biz“, “I need your lovin“, and “Portuguese Love“, let everyone know that “Vanilla Choc” wasn’t just a flash in the pan. That her lyrics and voice were a force to be reckoned with. And she is credited with being one of the first early “rappers” on the song “Square Biz!”

Whether singing “slow jams“, “music for lovers“, or “shake ya ass jams“, Teena’s voice could fill the bill. And her live performances left you loving her even more. You listened to her songs in the car on the way to the concert and cranked it up on your way home or to the after party. Her slow jams, “Ooo la la la“, “Dear Lover“, “If I were a bell“, “Out on a limb“, and her remake of Rose Royce’s “Wishing on a star“, touched our hearts like few others. Then add in Duets with artists like Kurupt – “Baby who’s is it”, Faith Evans – “Can’t last a day”, Gerald Levert – “A rose is still a rose”, Lenny Kravitz – “Main Squeeze”, Patti Labelle – “Secret Garden”, Howard Hewitt – “Lover’s Lane”, and Mc Lyte – “The Pressure”, and you can see all of the talented people who created beautiful music with Teena!

There have been many white performers who have tried to crack the “color barrier” and get “in” with African American listeners. From an early Elvis, to Madonna, Eminem, and Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, and Robin Thicke, they have all had varied results making inroads with Black folks. The closest example of that is Madonna.

Like Teena, people thought Madonna was black until they saw her on MTV. But unlike Teena Marie, Madonna sold Black folks out during a Spin magazine article in the January 1996 issue. She said that “all Black men beat their ladies”, that she has “never been disrespected more than when she was with a Black man”, and that “Black women put up with Black men treating them in this manner. She also said it was a ‘cultural thing‘!” The uproar from that article caused most African Americans to “back up off her” and her career has never been the same. Madonna, who was compared to Teena early in her career, has never reached the level of love and respect that Teena has with Black folks. And if answered honestly, it has bugged Madonna ever since. Even adopting a Black child, suspiciously seen as a way to get back into the good graces of Black folks, hasn’t worked!

Try driving in the “hood” playing “Like a virgin” or “Borderline” and see what happens. At best someone is going to tell you to “turn that shit down!At worse, you might get a window broken! Ride in the “hood” “bumpin’Square Biz” or “It must be magic” and you will be met with people “nodding their heads” or singing right along with you!

While many white performers have had more commercial success than Teena had, they aren’t considered “family” like Teena and welcome to come “sit at our tables.” Madonna, Eminem, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, and Robin Thicke, aren’t sitting on at our tables. Teena’s been with us for over 30 years. So ya’ll have a LONG way to go to be even mentioned. And for all the “House NIGroes, “Uncle Toms“, and “Sellouts” who will be asked to comment on this piece, go ahead and tell white people what THEY want to hear. Do what you need to do to keep your job, your position, or your so-called “friendships” boo boo. It won’t change anything. The TRUTH doesn’t change.

Oh, and when I say “sit at our tables“, I mean our mama’s or grand mama’s table! Because as we all know, we can’t bring “just anybody” to our mama’s house! And unlike the aforementioned white singers who might be invited and would arrive in a Limo, Teena would come too …. RIDING SHOTGUN!

      Deuces!

A known rapist who has hidden with the tacit approval of many of the top notch actors, actresses, and directors in Hollywood, was finally arrested on an outstanding warrant that was issued more than 30 years ago. Roman Polanski, whose wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson gang, was arrested in Switzerland after getting off of the plane to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award. That he was able to run from the long arms of the law for 30 years, and do so freely, is appalling. What is even worse, is that some people think he should be set free!

In 1978, Roman was arrested and PLEAD GUILTY TO drugging and raping a 13yr old girl. But he fled to Europe, France to be specific, before he could ever spend a night in prison. He was able to travel all over Europe without any problems. He worked with some of the most famous European AND American actors, actresses, and directors, all of whom knew what he had done. But to them, RAPE must not be such a bad thing. Because these poor excuses for human beings didn’t bat an eye about working for or with him. And now that he has been arrested, these same people want him freed.

On the View, hostess Whoopi Goldberg, who I HAD much respect for, stated that it “wasn’t rape-rape.” HUH? He was 37 years old, she was 13, he plied he with drugs and alcohol, and then ANALLY and ORALLY PENETRATED HER! And he NEVER spent one day in prison for that crime! I’d like to think that in hindsight, Ms. Goldberg has come to a different decision. But I always go with the first thing that comes out of someone’s mouth. Because that is usually how they really feel!

        Was Barack “Jailin”?
        Jul
        23

I’m not going to lie, I’m not really a baseball fan at all. I haven’t been to a game in decades. I find the sport to be boring and unless you are physically at the game where you can people watch and/or get you “eat on“, I’d much rather be doing something else. Damn near ANYTHING ELSE! The only time you will see me watching part of a baseball game is if I happen to flip through and see A-Rod, Manny, or someone who might hit the ball out of the park up to bat. Other than that, baseball doesn’t grace my TV screen. But I did happen to see the beginning of the All Star game last week and I watched President Barack Obama throw out the ceremonial “first pitch.” I didn’t get to see if it was a strike or not because they didn’t show it. But I did see him throw the ball.

A few days later while surfing the web, I saw a story about someone saying that the president was wearing “baggy jeans” and how it was not something a president should do. Thinking back, I didn’t remember seeing anything wrong with the jeans. And when I did a web search, nothing changed. I then went looking for the article and the reporter who said the jeans were baggy and saw that Meredith Vieira made that statement. I guess it must have been a slow news day because that comment held no merit whatsoever.

If you are a regular follower of this blog, you already know that I spent five years working with kids who were in the system. Many of them belonged in gangs, clicks, or crews, and I can’t count the number of times I saw true “baggy jeans” being worn. The style is called “jailin” and got its origins from prison. That is how some prisoners took to wearing their pants. I can remember one kid who I literally had to stop every morning and have him pull up his pants and buckle them correctly. And if I got distracted and didn’t see him walk in the door, he would wait for me to “chastise” him about his jeans. I even teased my mother when she would wear her “denim jean” outfit and ask her if she was “jailin.”

Shaqdeezy, Shaq-Fu-Snickens, the Diesel, the Big Aristotle, Superman. All the Same guy. Shaquille O’Neal. He’s had sooome summer hasn’t he? Let’s see. Where shall we begin!

First he all but guaranteed a championship to the Phoenix Suns only to be almost swept by the San Antonio Spurs. That really wasn’t going to happen, PERIOD. While Shaq may deliver a championship to the Suns in his second season there, he did with the Miami Heat; the Suns gave up the one guy who gave Tony Parker fits, Shawn Marion. Marion is long enough and quick enough to stay in front of Parker and if beaten, can recover quick enough to bother Parker’s shot. Or Shawn could stay in front of Ginobili and get a hand up on the jumper. So the idea of them winning this season was a joke at worse and a fallacy at best.

Second, he does the worse free style “rapEVER. That was straight wack!! It was so bad that I could only watch half of the online video before stopping it. The rap mentioned former teammate Kobe Bryant; essentially saying that he was the reason for Shaq’s pending divorce. Because there was some offensive language in the “rap”, honorary badges given to him from cities in Arizona and Virginia were rescinded. Some of his early rap, “Biological Didn’t Bother” was right on time, but this “live performance” was awful. It was so bad that the next time I saw Shaq on the screen, I started laughing just thinking about it!

THEN, a rapper that is more famous after meeting Shaq than before, accuses him of “stalking and harassing” her. Because of the “alleged stalking”, she has been granted a Restraining Order against him. I can understand that it might not be easy for him to meet women because of who he is, but to have to stalk someone? WTF??
