Is we sick?

I have watched with bemused disinterest all of the fussing, arguing, and fighting that has occurred at the Health Care town hall meetings. Because it is under the guise of “health care” that GROWN ADULTS are acting like children and literally getting into fist fights. But the real reason has nothing to do with the medical profession. It has to do with the hate that has come to the service since President Barack Obama was elected.

I find it interesting that most if not all of the people who attend these are WHITE and MIDDLE AGED! The same people who probably already have health care. For them, this is an more about yelling and screaming about “Obama” and less about how to make sure that everyone has access to proper medical care. My brother was recently in the hospital for two weeks and it seemed like almost EVERY DAY he was telling my mother and I about the shoddy treatment he was receiving. Oh did I mention that he is a former PSYCH NURSE and that my mother is a former R.N.? So you can well imagine that with other 50 years worth of knowledge between then, they KNOW EXACTLY what proper care medical care is supposed to look like?

For those people who have more than one brain cell, they should remember that health care is reform is not a new phenomenon. During the Clinton Administration, President Clinton attempted to reform health care along with the aid of his wife, Hillary Clinton. But there was such a backlash against then first lady and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, that eventually, it was shelved. Again, the subterfuge was not “health care” , it was to keep a “woman in her place.”

I wrote a post titled “Money can buy anything if you have enough of it” where I talked about the illegal Black Market for organs. I made a reference to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs who was reported to have just had a kidney transplant. While I had no knowledge that Mr. Jobs had purchased a kidney, and I still don’t, I speculated that with enough money you can indeed buy one.

I was immediately chastised by people who said that I was one of those “irresponsible bloggers” who make statements with nothing to back them up. They said it was virtually impossible to buy an organ and that even though I had referenced two other “real news articles” that I had watched the movie “Coma” one too many times. For you young heads, the premise of the movie is that relatively healthy people wind up in comas after minor surgeries. A suspicious doctor finds out that the coma patients are being used as organ donors.

This past week, over 44 people were arrested in New Jersey for corruption. This is not news. New Jersey has been corrupt for decades. What is news is that most of the people arrested were either in local or state politics and were well known and respected Rabbis! But it doesn’t end there. The real story is that many of the Rabbis involved in this scandal were involved with Black Market organ sales!

If you have been reading my posts on a regular basis, you know that I spent five years working for a Non-Profit Teen Drug and Alcohol treatment center. Some of the teens were teen mothers and fathers. One of my “hats” was as the Intake Coordinator. I explained the treatment program to the teen and his or her parents or guardians. I also explained the rules or our center. And lastly, I explained how all of this fit in with their probation. Early on I learned not to ask certain questions to the teens in front of their parents because I would either get the “gee, I only used drugs one time, and that was the time I got arrested” answer. Or they would lie and say they used every drug under the sun to watch their parents eyes role around in their heads. Or they would say that they were sexually active when they weren’t or say they they had never had sex when they were either pregnant or had gotten their girlfriend pregnant. So on the first day of treatment, I would complete the intake process. And I would always add another question to the “intake form.” I would ask the teens, “where do you see yourself in six months, one year, and five years.” Yup, the same questions we are asked on job interviews. And to my horror, the last answer was usually “dead.”

The Drug and Alcohol Treatment center where I worked was in the “inner city“, but we had teens of all ages, races, sexes, sexual preferences, and income levels, at our center. And while 90% of the teens involved in the treatment center were there because they were on probation, some were brought in by their parents who were concerned about their erratic behavior. But in completing the intake process, I found a common tread running through 85% of the teens in the program. A fatalistic view of of their future. While some kinds might have been in the “wrong place at the wrong time”, some of the kids were just “living their lives to the fullest.” Or living “La Vida Loca.” (The Crazy Life) And the things they admitted to having participated in shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone who was paying attention.

As I said in a previous post, cops aren’t my favorite people. And it doesn’t matter if they are gay or straight, male or female, black or white. In my almost 28 years of driving, I have been harassed, followed, and jack up by the police more times than I care to remember. And I have heard cops laughing and giggling about how they “made someone’s day” by giving them a bogus ticket. Yeah, real funny. Like I said, most of them are GANG MEMBERS with BADGES! And before anyone comments by saying “then don’t call the cops when you need help if that is the way you feel about it.” Trust me, most African Americans only call the police as a LAST RESORT because we know they are going to give a HALF-ASSED EFFORT in helping us so WHAT’S THE USE!!!!!!! But this incident has my blood boiling.

Professional Football player Ryan Moats was stopped by a cop for running a red light turning into a hospital. When he was stopped, he informed the cop that his mother-in-law was DYING and that was the reason he ran the light. Ryan’s wife, whose mother was dying, tried to explain the situation but the cop, Mr. Robert Powell, didn’t seem to care. Fearing that she wasn’t going to be able to say her final goodbye to the woman who raised her, Tamishia Moats ran into the hospital. We are all lucky that this heartless cop didn’t shoot her in the back!!!

Living in california and being a woman, and having an incident where Kara Knott was killed by a CHP, we have been told to put our flashers on if we feel nervous about the area we are being requested to stop at by the police. We were told that putting the flashers on lets the cop know that we see them. Moats’ did just that. The dashboard camera, showed just how cowardly Mr. Powell was. The more Moats tried to explain the situation, the angrier the cop became. After a heated exchange, Powell said, “Shut your mouth! You can either settle down and cooperate or I can just take you to jail for running a red light.” Ryan was also told his car could be towed. That he could be put in handcuffs. Take someone to jail for running a red light!!! You have got to be kidding me!

What do you have to hide, Doc?

Most of my blog posts are about my views on things that struck me as wrong or hateful, hurtful, or just mean spirited. I’ve never been one to sit by and let things go on around me that were wrong and not try and stop it. In high school, both by brother and I were known to be people who would break up fights. People would literally have fights on the other end of the campus to make sure we weren’t around to stop it. I’ve also never been one to let people say and do whatever they wanted to do to me without me standing up for myself. I have lost jobs, when I couldn’t afford to lose jobs, because I REFUSED to let people lie on or about me. So when I initially read the article about some doctors forcing patients to sign waiver agreements it got my blood boiling. Essentially these “doctors” don’t want you to complain about the treatment they give you. There are web sites that you can go to, Vitals.com, Dr.Score.com and RateMD.com, that have ratings of doctors and their medical care. Medical type posts aren’t usually my foray, they are left to my mother’s blog, A Nurse’s Journey, but I couldn’t sit by and let this situation pass and not respond to it. If you have nothing to hide Doc, you should welcome a rating system!

If you read my mother’s blog, you will see that she has gone through a myriad of medical procedures and has seen a lot of doctors. Many times I was in the room with her when she met with these people, both male and female. While most of her doctors have been great, some of them have been real losers who really shouldn’t be in the medical profession!

One of the best doctors she has ever had is Dr. John Murphy from Kaiser Hospital in San Diego. This man has continually gone past the “line of duty” in caring for my mother and I will forever be grateful to him. It is neat to see the smiles that come across both my mother’s face and Dr. Murphy’s face when they see each other. His care is one of the reasons my mother is still alive today!
